A fab Arthur Salm (Sweden), vintage fruit bowl. The bowl is known as 'Kalmar' and was made circa late 1960s or 1970s.
Arthur Salm was a Jew who fled Germany for the USA in 1944. Arthur Salm Inc. was formed in Chicago circa 1952; he designed numerous pieces of designer steel tableware, hollowware and flatware alongside other designers such as Carl Auböck. Manufacture was outsourced, so you may find pieces made in Sweden, Japan and Germany. He died in 1988.
A quality Swedish build, simple and classy, with straight wooden inserts each side, and wooden feet. The wood is walnut. The stainless steel is in a simple scoop. It's stamped to the base with the AS logo.
Dish is a good statement sized 26cm x 11cm x 25cm. Shiny metal, in good vintage condition. Metal does have some signs of use and age with some scratches. Wood has been treated so has a reddy sheen, just like teak; it's good vintage condition. There's a little chip to an end of the wood which you can see on photo 5. The bowl does show some signs of age/use but is fabulous a striking designer Modernist item. Not suitable for wet foods.
A hard to find item!
