A 1970s Canadian ornamental pitcher jug shaped vase. Its by Blue Mountain Pottery - they specialised in retro animal figurines and ornaments, mostly sold as tourist ware, with their distinctive liquid glazes.
Red clay base with a unique, trademarked glazing process known as 'reflowing decorating'. Two different liquid glazes, one light and one dark in colour, were applied. During the firing process the glazes would run, creating streaking and bleeding patterns unique to each piece. This piece has the green and black glazes - starting black, it drips through mossy and forest greens, before the black base. It's all very glossy and liquid and smooth. Inside is black. The black is iridescent in places near the base. It's a typical mid century styled simplified shape, not unlike a West German vase design. It's shape number 25 I believe.
It's mid sized 10.5" or 26.5cm, and in excellent condition. With Blue Mountain Pottery there are deliberate runs and patches and irregularities in the glaze, all part of the appeal and all as intended - see photos. Maker's marks - the three trees logo and 'Canada' - to the base.
Perfect for a mid-century inspired interior, on a teak sideboard or shelf. Usable as a single stem vase - I can picture a peacock feather in it.
