A signed vintage studio pottery cat figurine, by Carn Pottery, Penzance, Cornwall from the 1970s or so...
Carn Pottery was John Beusmans; he used muted blue, brown and green glazes over a pale neutral-toned matt clay and is best known for his geometric Cubist or angular vases. This cat would have been moulded with pressed flower patterns, then a petrol or denim blue wash applied, which has been rubbed back to reveal highlights and lowlights. The subtle raised motifs are a sunflower to his chest and a large flower bud to his spine. John was inspired by the Cornish sea and landscapes and primitive Celtic/Runic Studio Pottery designs. This is model number FC1.
Both hand signed by John and stamped with the Carn studio stamp. 13.5cm tall x 6cm wide x 4.5cm deep. Excellent clean condition with no noticeable flaws. These are all different, collect a group of them!
