A fab (and hard to find) vintage cat money box by Kenneth Townsend and likely produced at this brother's studio workshop at Iden Pottery, Rye, East Sussex. Iden Pottery was potter Dennis Townsend - Dennis' brother Kenneth worked there for a very short spell and produced a few designs for the Pottery. This is a rare piece by Kenneth who is also known for his stylised work with Hornsea, Chance Glass and Galt games. Circa 1970s. He's a handmade moulded clay money box with cute smiling cat figurine with stylised features. The figure is impressed into a square block money box - the same image both sides. The block is a pale unglazed clay, cream coloured, with brown applied to the cat figure and rubbed back to reveal highlights and lowlights. Money slot to the top with no way of emptying it. 'K' initial to the base. Typical of the 1970s Studio Pottery era. This is a rare ornamental and collectable money box. If you go to the dedicated Kenneth Townsend website and look at Iden Pottery, you will see an example of his pottery cat for comparison. The money box is petite: 9cm x 9cm squared x 4.5cm wide. Very good condition for the age a couple of small marks to the natural pale bisque clay and a couple of tiny baseline imperfections which may be from moulding. It's empty. Free P&P to the UK. *********** Kenneth Townsend (1931-99) managed to capture the humorous side of life through his art, drawings and writing. He was based in Hastings and is known to have worked as a freelance designer for Hornsea Pottery, Chance Brothers (glass), Cuckoobird Productions (textiles), Merit (games) and James Galt & Co. Ltd (toys). He exhibited his abstract art both at home and abroad. His cartoons are endearing, whimsical and unforgettable and he was best known for the recognisable animal series 'Menagerie', which adorned ceramic tiles.
