A beautiful vintage art glass pillar candle holder or small bowl by Tapio Wirkkala, part of the Aslak range for Ahlstrom Iittala from 1972. This range of chunky textured bowls came in three variations (reindeer, map or clear), and this particular one is the Map of Europe design. This is the middle of the three sizes available - 12cm wide - it's harder to find in this size. Model no 2625. Circa 1970s vintage. Can be used as a pillar candle holder, or as a small snack bowl or trinkets dish, or just for a display/collection.
The design is on the base and is raised slightly, a subtle design of a map of Europe. The side of the dish is ice like textured and irregular, typical of Wirkkala's designs. The rim is flat and polished, as is the inner circular bowl. High quality glass, undoubtedly with a crystal content. Looks stunning in the sun (hard to photograph in winter light!).
Glass is up to 2.5cm thick around the outsides, making the piece heavy for the size - it's a small chunky bowl at about 12cm wide x 4cm tall. Just over 700 grams.
Very good condition with just some small signs of its age to the base.
Includes P&P to the UK.
