A vintage studio pottery long slim shallow bowl, by Celtic Pottery, Newlyn, Cornwall from the late 1960s or early 1970s. Celtic Pottery was Bill and Maggie Fisher. Bill specialised in these paintings of stylised mythical grotesque phoenixes, fish, birds, griffins, patterns etc. Maggie later took on theses 'Folk' designs. I believe these character pieces are late 1960s. Celtic Pottery is also known for the 1970s Medallion series of designs. It's beautifully hand painted with a stylised phoenix character, in black (with a green halo), over an ochre speckled background glaze. The eyes and rectangular outline shape have been defined sgraffito style, see pics. The rim has black spots and lines, and the clay below is a pale off-white colour. It's unsigned (like most) but has its original label to the base. Simple rectangular-shaped design, probably more suited as an ornamental piece, but could be used as a coin dish, jewellery dish, snack bowl, remote control or phone holder, etc. Perfect for display and use, and for a collector. A more unusual long slim rectangle - 29.5cm x 9.5cm wide x 1.5cm. Very good condition with no noticeable flaws. Handmade, so all glazing and painting is deliberate and from at the time. Price includes P&P to the UK.
