A vintage studio pottery cylinder shaped vase, by Celtic Pottery, Newlyn, Cornwall from the late 1960s or early 1970s. Celtic Pottery was Bill and Maggie Fisher. Bill specialised in these paintings of stylised mythical grotesque phoenixes, fish, birds, griffins, patterns etc. Maggie later took on theses 'Folk' designs. I believe these character pieces are late 1960s. Celtic Pottery is also known for the later 1970s Medallion series of designs. It's beautifully hand painted with two stylised phoenix characters, in black over a sponged blue green speckled background, over a white background glaze. The rim is dotted black and the clay below is a pale colour. It's unsigned (like many) but it does maintain its original vintage gold paper sticker to the base. Simple small narrow round design, probably more suited as an ornamental piece - good for display and use and for a collector. 14.5cm tall x 5cm wide. Very good condition. One slither of glaze missing, shown on the last photo. Price includes P&P to the UK.
