A super example of an early 1960s Caithness ring hooped vase. It's in the hard to find early Loch Blue colour. The blue is richer towards the base and is cased in clear glass with darker applied rings.
Made in Scotland and designed by Domhnall OBroin in 1961 - he was strongly influenced by the clean simple lines of Scandinavian design and he used a sommerso technique, as per Murano, Italy. Nice simple Modernist mid century design. These ring vases were very hard to make so were only produced for a short time. The rings were trailed on by hand and then smoothed and rounded by hand, resulting in many seconds. The mould was the same as the cylinder vase - and this is the tallest slim cylinder produced at 12" tall. It's hard to tell what colour the rings are on this example, I think they're in Peat but look dark blue.
Very good condition. Flat polished rim is great, there are some small fine surface marks but nothing major - great for display and for a collection. Base is good. No chips or nibbles. The upper rings shows workmanship and has lines and joins within it - it may have been a second. I'd give it a 9/10. Tall and slim at 12 inches tall x 6.2cm wide cylinder.
