A fab 1970s Canadian art pottery vase. Its by Blue Mountain Pottery - they specialised in retro animal figurines and ornaments, mostly sold as tourist ware, with their distinctive liquid glazes. Most pieces are their distinctive green/blue with black - this is the hard to find red/orange flambé or flame glaze.
Red clay base with a unique, trademarked glazing process known as 'reflowing decorating'. Two different liquid glazes, one light and one dark in colour, were applied. During the firing process the glazes would run, creating streaking and bleeding patterns unique to each piece. This piece has a red base with orange dripping and bleeding over it. It's all very glossy and liquid and smooth and tactile. Inside the rim has varied colours. It's a typical mid century styled simplified shape, not unlike a West German or Poole vase.
It's mid sized 21.5cm, and in very good condition. 10cm widest at the belly x 6cm rim. The long inner neck narrows to 3cm so suited to just a few stems if used.
Very good with no chips - one little scratch is all I can see. With Blue Mountain Pottery there are deliberate runs and patches and irregularities in the glaze, all part of the appeal and all as intended - see photos. Maker's marks 'BMP Canada' (in their triangular shape logo) to the base.
Perfect for a mid-century inspired interior, on a teak sideboard or shelf.
