A small vintage handmade (wheel thrown) round bowl, by Rye Pottery, Sussex. This is dated precisely to 1955-1956 and by either John or Walter Cole.
Rye Pottery was John Cole and Walter Cole. Walter (Wally) was responsible for creating the ceramics and running the pottery while John made the designs and created the patterns and decorations. As their work became increasingly popular, the Coles began to employ and train other staff - throwers David Sharp, Dennis Townsend, Raymond Everett, David Smeed and Jim Elliott who were later joined by Pam Goddard and June Woolley.
The old red clay was dug up by the Coles locally so dates it to an earlier bowl, along with the mid 1950s base stamp. Wheel thrown and glazed white, the nicely rounded simple bowl has black and greeny (duck egg) random vertical scribble lines. It has a little round black foot.
Very good condition, as manufactured/hand made with natural glazing quirks. There is a very hard to see hairline inside the rim, see last picture. 6.2cm tall x 9.8cm widest at rim - perfect size for a nuts or nibbles bowl. Looks very smart, almost contemporary, way ahead of its time.
