A trio of small mid century handmade (wheel thrown) vases or pots or beakers, by Rye Pottery, Sussex. These are mid 1950s and by Jim (Jimmy) Elliott.
Rye Pottery was John Cole and Walter Cole. As their work became increasingly popular, the Coles began to employ and train other staff - throwers David Sharp, Dennis Townsend, Raymond Everett, David Smeed and Jim Elliott who were later joined by Pam Goddard and June Woolley.
The old red clay was dug up by the Coles locally so this dates them to earlier pieces. Wheel thrown and glazed white, the flared simple pots have thick hand painted blue/green stripes and finer fishbone lines and dots, with yellow background stripes. They have horizontal stripes inside and stripes to their lower body too - all hand painted.
They all have different back stamps but are from the same era: the circular stamp is 1955-1956, while the other two are 1957-1969. I believe Jimmy was only at Rye from 1952 to 1957, so we're looking at mid 1950s vintage. Two have Jimmy's 'J' base stamp.
Very good condition, as manufactured/hand made with natural glazing quirks. No chips or cracks. 8.5cm tall x 7cm widest at rim, all very similar sizes and decor. More suited as a posy vases or for display in a collection.
