A vintage and unique handmade curiosity... This was the bowl made by the metalwork/technical teacher at Stalham Boys School (Norfolk) in the late 1950s or early 1960s to demonstrate and teach all the different metalwork techniques. It's a two-piece curved silver-plated bowl with a stylised flower frog (or openwork topper). The silver-plated curved lower bowl has a domed centre with a freehand engraved atomic 'flower'. It's lightly hammered and fades from the copper metal below to the silver edges. The topper demonstrates metal openwork in an Atomic style from the mid century. It has small legs and a ring/stand neatly soldered on underneath so it sits in the indented circle in the bowl. It also shows what could be done with sheet metalwork, cutting/sawing out, curving/shaping and the silver plating of the copper below. It's 24cm long x 13cm wide x 7cm tall. Good vintage condition. The silver plating is quite thin so there's copper showing through. It has a few marks/darker areas. I've not polished it underneath (it's fiddly!) and it would benefit from a re-plating. Please see all photos. It's a beautiful handmade and unique piece, very much in the mid century Atomic style and a piece of teaching history. I couldn't find the name of the maker, it's unsigned.
