Vintage Blue Mountain Pottery mid-century pitcher/jug/vase. Ceramic blue green drip glazed. Stylised Modernist mid century 1970s retro. BMP

A stylish 1970s Canadian ornamental pitcher jug. Its by Blue Mountain Pottery - they specialised in retro animal figurines and ornaments, mostly sold as tourist ware, with their distinctive liquid glazes.

Red clay base with a unique, trademarked glazing process known as 'reflowing decorating'. Two different liquid glazes, one light and one dark in colour, were applied. During the firing process the glazes would run, creating streaking patterns unique to each piece. This piece has the greeny blue and black glazes - starting black, it drips through iridescent (petrol-like) colours, through green to jade/peacock blue (blue green) around the rounded middle, before the black base. Inside is glossy black. It's all very smooth, glossy, liquid and reflective! It's a typical mid century styled simplified shape, not unlike a West German vase design.

It's a mid size - 18cm x 10cm diameter at the middle, and in very good condition. With Blue Mountain Pottery there are deliberate runs and patches in the glaze, all part of the appeal and all as intended - see photos. No readable maker's marks to the base, but you can just make out the triangular BMP logo.

Perfect for a mid-century inspired interior, on a teak sideboard or shelf. Great for use as a vase too.
