Vintage Bitossi Seta sgraffito pottery/ceramic Compote dish. Aldo Londi, signed 843 ITALY. Gold gilt silk incised lines. Mid century footed
A fabulous example of a Bitossi Seta (Silk) range compote dish or footed bowl. Most likely late 1950s to mid 1960s vintage, it is signed to the base with '843 ITALY'. The complex decor is a series of vertical pastel ribbon-like stripes, with five horizontal gold gilt zig-zag diamond patterned bands, then over decorated with freehand sgraffito (incised) patterns and lines. Internally the bowl is a lush glossy warm purple or lilac/mauve. The outer stripes are muted cream, pink, brown and blue. Designed by Aldo Londi - all very typical of the Seta range where the bright coloures were muted on application to the matte clay surface.
Excellent condition for the age and era. The outer matte glaze has a couple of dirty patches, and one black ink mark- see photos. No chips or cracks. Some wear to the gold gilt. And a small bit of crazing to the base. Just shy of 20cm tall x 24cm wide at the rim.
Similar pieces are featured on p76-77 of Mark Hill's Alla Moda book. It's very striking and photogenic - perfect for a mid-century home and for a Bitossi collector.
