Vintage 7" Nils Olsson Dala horse figure. Wood traditional folk art. Orange handpainted carved horse figurine. Swedish Dalahorse 1960s 1970s
A Dalecarlian horse or Dala horse (Swedish: Dalahäst) is a traditional carved, painted wooden statue of a horse originating in the Swedish province of Dalarna (Dalecarlia). The original meaning behind the carved Swedish Dala horses may be unknown, but today the painted wooden Dalecarlian horse is essentially a symbol of the country of Sweden itself. Every Dalahorse is unique.
This larger example is an unknown vintage (1960s to 1990s) and is made by Nils Olsson, brother of Gannas Olsson. The original gold paper label reads "Akta Dalahemslojd tillv. Nils Olsson, Nusnas, Mora, Sweden".
Made in Sweden, hand carved from carefully selected pine, hand painted and varnished. The colours are yellow, green, red and white, over a rich deep orange, and the finish is glossy. He stands 16.8cm.
He is in very good condition with no chips or splinters or missing paint, see photos. There are some rougher tooling areas - part of the workmanship.
