A signed stretching stylised bird figurine, dating from the late 1970s or early 1980s. It's by John Griffiths, St Agnes, Cornwall, England - he seems to have specialised in carving simplified mid century style stretching animal and bird figurines. There's not many out there to find, so quite a rare find.

These are generally solid elm wood, I'm not sure if this is, but it certainly looks similar. The hardwood has a teak tone, with a vivid darker grain, forming beautiful lines and darker ares. It's beautifully and skillfully carved - the bird is stretching up and twisting. Smooth and tactile. Flat squared base with his signature - it's hard to read!

The bird is typically mid century styled - I'm unsure as what breed of bird it is, but with the short legs and long neck, he could be a cormorant. He may even be a goose. Perfect for a mid-century inspired interior, on a teak sideboard or shelf.

He's a mid size - 9.5" or 24cm, and in good condition. No chips or splinters, but there's fading, small marks and areas of wear. It was lightly oiled, but would benefit from a re-finish. Great for a collector.
