Mid-century John Fox signed bull sculpture. Wooden hand carved black ebony figurine. Modernist vintage simplified wood. Bovine animal statue
A vintage hand-carved original wooden bull figurine, by John Fox sculptor, circa 1960s/1970s/1980s vintage.
Carved skilfully from a deep brown/black ebony hardwood with a distinctive grain and colouring. The handwritten sticker remains to the base and signed by hand with his initials (JF) to the base.
John Fox's cats (and his other figurines) are highly collectable and bear the initials JF. John’s work became well known, especially his trademark ‘Martha’ cat and other minimalist designs. Perry Lancaster studied wood carving and sculpture as an apprentice to John Fox in Cambridgeshire. After John died in 1991, Perry bought the copyrights from John’s estate and carried on the business in his own name, adding more of his own designs in the same distinctive style. Still working mostly with handtools, Perry continues the work from his house and studio in France.
Very good collectable displayable condition, see photos. He has a nibble to the end of an ear, please see all photos. I've not re-finished this little fellow; he has a natural sheen, is tactile and very smooth. He's simple, elegant and exquisitely made. Apx 11.3cm long x 5cm tall x 5.3cm deep.
Perfect for a collector and for a mid-century inspired interior, on a sideboard or shelf.
