Mid century Cinque Ports Pottery pin dish. 1950s-1960 handmade clay studio art. David Sharp, Rye, Sussex small plate. Modernist vintage 4.5"

A vintage studio pottery pin dish by Cinque Port Pottery, Rye, Sussex. The early base stamp dates this to a 1950s mid century example...

Rye Art Pottery was founded in 1956 by potter David Sharp and his friend George Gray. David had previously worked at the similarly-named Rye Pottery, so Rye Art Pottery was renamed Cinque Port Pottery instead. Cinque Port Pottery was a successful venture, with David Sharp as the artist. By the early 60s the partnership became a limited company - Cinque Ports Pottery Ltd (note, the new use of the plural 'Ports' and the addition of Ltd). Sharp worked there until 1964. So I think we can probably date this early piece to 1956-1962 or so, and by David Sharp.

Wheel thrown and glazed white, the small shallow dish has moss green and dusky pink stripes/whirls, carefully painted on while rotating, with fine black freeform lines and a central spiral. The red clay was excavated locally to Rye in the early days I believe.

This is a small dish, likely a one-off. 12cm wide - best for display and for a collector rather than use. In very good condition with no real signs of age. It has its handmade glazing quirks and bubbles etc - see photos. No chips or crazing. Early stamp to the base.

Price includes P&P to the UK.
