Mark Valcera Switzerland vintage 1950s/1960s pottery jug vase. Rare fat lava era ceramic. Blue/green & white horse, sgrafitto. Shape #46 pot
A fabulous and hard to find Mark Valcera jug-shaped vase, from Switzerland. Signed to the base with 'Valcera 46 Swisse' (I think) with a maker's logo to the centre. Circa mid century 1950s or 1960s fat lava era, and very much in that West German shape of vase, with Italian style decor. It's shape/form no 46, a shorter jug.
It's a blue/green (teal or petrol) tone, with a handpainted horse drawing, over a pale grey. The artist has hand-painted or drawn a stylised standing twisted horse, looking inquisitive over his shoulder, with foliage and patterns around. Typical of his horse illustrations. It looks sgraffito (scratched in) with watercolour blue/green painting and black outlines, see photos. All matte glazes.
Excellent condition for age and era. No chips or cracks or crazing etc. Handmade/hand decorated, so all as manufactured. 16cm tall x 9.5cm wide base, rim is 5cm wide - so suitable for use as a vase with 6-12 medium stems.
