Louis Hudson Cornish studio art. Pottery slab block vase, 1970s vintage/retro. Brutalist modernist geometric, handmade ceramic stoneware
A fab Louis Hudson pottery slab vase, made in Cornwall, England, in the 1970s. Rectangular with straight(ish) edges, brick or block like.
Louis Hudson opened a pottery in Trethevy Cornwall in 1971, closing in 1983. His work includes lamp bases, wheel vases, slab vases & cylinder vases in stoneware featuring distinctive geometric mouldings that reflected Cornish ceramics of the time.
This is a super vase with deliberate irregularities (wonky and hand applied pressed geometric patterns) which reflects its handmade studio pottery nature, and giving it great character. The distinctive patterns are runic/Celtic inspired with a modernist/brutalist appearance.
Lovely natural earthy neutral tones. Overall sandy unglazed colouring, with reddy brown raised patterns with pale olive grey glaze in the recesses. Areas of glossy glaze and matte contrasts. Sides are brown and the glaze has some speckles/spotting in as well - it's darker than many. The two feature sides are different patterns.
In excellent condition. Unsigned. Would hold a good dozen short flower stems. A mid size - 15.5 x 10 x 7cm max. A fascinating unique artwork, as the artist intended... Would make a fab addition for any collector of Louis Hudson, Cornish or studio pottery and would complement any retro, vintage, 70s, modernist, minimalist or modern interior.
Includes P&P to the UK.
