Celtic Pottery Newlyn bowl/dish. Black & brown Folk bird phoenix griffin. 1960s/1970s vintage retro. Cornish ochre studio art. Bill Fisher
A vintage studio pottery shallow bowl, by Celtic Pottery, Newlyn, Cornwall from the late 1960s or early 1970s. Celtic Pottery was Bill and Maggie Fisher. Bill specialised in these paintings of stylised mythical grotesque phoenixes, fish, birds, griffins, patterns etc. Maggie later took on theses 'Folk' designs. I believe these character pieces are late 1960s. Celtic Pottery is also known for the 1970s Medallion series of designs.
It's beautifully hand painted with a stylised phoenix character, in black (with a green halo), over a brown and ochre speckled background glaze. The eyes have been drawn around, see pics. The rim has black spots inside, dashed to the rim and large ovals outside, and the clay below is a pale off-white colour. It's unsigned (like many). Simple oval egg-shaped design, probably more suited as an ornamental piece, but could be used as a coin dish, jewellery dish, snack bowl, etc. Perfect for display and use, and for a collector.
17.5cm x 13cm wide x 4.5cm. Very good condition with no noticeable flaws. Handmade, so all glazing is deliberate and from at the time.
Price includes P&P to the UK.
