Celtic Pottery 5 cups & saucers. Black, white and ochre Folk design, Newlyn. 1960s/1970s vintage retro. Cornish handmade studio pottery art
A vintage studio pottery set of cups and saucers by Celtic Pottery, Newlyn, Cornwall from the late 1960s or early 1970s. Celtic Pottery was Bill and Maggie Fisher. Bill specialised in these paintings of stylised mythical grotesque phoenixes, fish, birds, griffins, spiky plants, patterns etc. Maggie later took on theses 'Folk' designs. I believe these pieces are late 1960s. Celtic Pottery is also known for the 1970s Medallion series of designs.
This set of beautifully hand painted cups have two stylised black spiky 'plants' front and back with a background of dappled ochre and brown. The blacks have bled into a blue/green halo. The design is over an off-white background glaze. Matte black pottery handles. The rims are dotted black and the clay below is a pale colour. They all maintain their original vintage gold paper stickers to the bases (suggesting they've not been used). Simple tapered-in design, probably more suited as ornamental pieces - perfect for display and use and for a collector. Every cup is unique and handmade - the glazes and designs all vary.
Cups are 7cm tall x 8.5cm wide at the base. Excellent condition. They hold about 200ml - just shy of a standard 'cup' measurement.
Saucers are 15.5cm wide. The saucers are a matte back, almost irridescent. Due the matte glaze, these show marks very easily.
Price includes P&P to the UK. (Price is based on £9 per cup and saucer).
