Celtic Pottery, Newlyn, lamp base. 1970s vintage Cornish Studio art. Retro Modernist Medallion ceramic. Round squat handmade stoneware base.

A super retro pottery lamp base which I believe is by Celtic Pottery, Newlyn, Cornwall.

It's in the Medallion pattern, designed and made by Maggie Fisher & Ed Stevens in the 1970s (they were part of the same Cornish studio pottery movement as the highly collectable Troika). This lamp base features an 'incised' or resist pattern cut into dark brown - the patterns are pale grey/green and bubbled/speckled. The lower half is a dark brown black, with a lighter tan brown glossy strip to the middle upper. It tapers outwards then inwards, a squat UFO shape. The top has been fitted with a larger bayonet bulb socket fitting.

The distinctive patterns are Runic/Celtic inspired, with a Modernist retro shape. Would make a fab addition for any collector of Cornish or studio pottery and would complement any retro, vintage, 70s, modernist, minimalist or modern interior. A fascinating and functional sculptural artwork.

No maker's marks, but undoubtedly Celtic Pottery. The ceramic part is 12.5cm tall x 20cm wide, and with the bayonet light fitting it's 19cm tall. The lamp is fully functional (not PAT tested, just used by myself at home). It has an on/off switch on the upper fitting. You may want to update the lamp fittings.
