Caithness Stroma vintage 6" art glass bowl/dish #4018. Cased smokey Soot grey shallow bowl by Domhnall OBroin. 1970s, Scottish handmade
A beautifully simple piece of art glass, by Caithness Glass, Scotland. Circa 1970s vintage. It's not photographed in the Caithness Glass book by Mark Hill, but I think this is a 6" 4018 bowl - part of the Stroma series (catalogue images from 1972 are on pages 108 and 110). Designed by Domhnall OBroin, mouth blown art glass.
Lovely thick glass, smokey grey (Soot) inside, cased in clear glass. Shallow dish with lightly tapered outwards sides and thick flat polished rim, like a mid century Scandinavian piece. Simple, stylish, beautifully finished. The grey is more a green/grey than a silver blue/grey.
Really nice condition for age and era, virtually untouched. No chips or fleebites or other marks. 4cm tall x 6" wide at rim. Rim is 5mm wide. Typical Caithness base - smooth and slightly undulating. There are some small inclusions, imperfections and bubbles within the glass from time of manufacture, most are in the middle inside the bowl. Please see photos.
