15" Vintage Blue Mountain mid-century tall pitcher/jug/vase. Pottery ceramic teal green/blue drip glazed. Modernist mid century 1970s retro
A tall 1970s Canadian ornamental pitcher jug. Its by Blue Mountain Pottery - they specialised in retro animal figurines and ornaments, mostly sold as tourist ware, with their distinctive liquid glazes.
Red clay base with a unique, trademarked glazing process known as 'reflowing decorating'. Two different liquid glazes, one light and one dark in colour, were applied. During the firing process the glazes would run, creating streaking patterns unique to each piece. This piece has the green and black glazes - starting browny black, it drips through dark green, then the glaze turns a lighter whiter blue/green around the rounded middle, before the black base. Inside looks to be a very deep blue. It's all very glossy and liquid! It's a typical mid century styled simplified shape, not unlike a West German vase design. It's shape number 25 I believe.
It's big - 15.5" or 39cm, and in great condition. With Blue Mountain Pottery there are deliberate runs and patches in the glaze, all part of the appeal and all as intended - see photos. It's a really good tall statement example. No readable maker's marks to the base.
Perfect for a mid-century inspired interior, on a teak sideboard or shelf. Usable as a single stem vase - I can picture a large peacock feather in it.
