13" Shelf vintage studio pottery vase, 1970s mid century/retro. Brutalist modernist geometric, handmade ceramic stoneware. Unique, Halifax
A lovely Shelf extra large studio vase, made near Halifax, England in the 1970s. Rectangular with straight(ish) edges, block like, lightly tapering in towards the top flared rim.
This is a super vase with deliberate irregularities (wonky and hand applied patterns and glazes) which reflects its handmade studio pottery nature, giving it great character. The 3D patterns are very similar to those of (and undoubtedly inspired by) Bernard Rooke, Louis Hudson and Tremain, with a modernist/brutalist appearance. Lovely organic natural earthy neutral tones. Overall pale stone colouring, with tan brown coloured raised patterns with glaze in the recesses. The two feature sides are different patterns - most likely unique, handmade. Glazed deep brown internally. Unsigned, but if you google 'Shelf Halifax tall vase' you will see others like it, although this is more exaggerated, more 3D, and more elaborate/detailed! Distinctive angled baseline.
Would make a fab addition for any collector of Shelf, Louis Hudson, Cornish or studio pottery and would complement any retro, vintage, 70s, modernist, minimalist or modern interior.
In excellent vintage condition. Unsigned. It did have a protective felt base which I've partially taken off. A few insignificant surface marks from over the years, but no chips, cracks etc. Would hold a good few dozen extra long statement flower stems. A huge size - 33.5cm x 11.5 x 11cm.
A fascinating unique large handmade pottery artwork!
Includes P&P to the UK. UK only, sorry.
