Whitefriars Glass - Sold item encyclopedia
My Whitefriars (James Powell & Sons of Whitefriars, England) sold items date from around the mid 1950s up until the factory closed in 1980. This covers simpler, chunkier and controlled bubble glass creations by James Hogan and William Wilson, through all the Geoffrey Baxter mid century sculptural and textured ranges. There's a splash of soda glass along the way, along with the odd paperweight and figurine...

A silver grey vintage Whitefriars Coffin vase. Pattern number 9686.
Designed by Geoffrey Baxter in the 1960s and made by Whitefriars glassworks, as part of the textured range.
Bark-like texture on front and back with smooth sides.
Unsure of exact age, likely to be 1960's or 1970's.
I'm not sure if this is the rarer 'silver' from 1972 or if it is a lighter version of 'Pewter'.
See photos, one photo shows it beside my Pewter bowl. It's lighter and more silver grey.
Cased in clear/flint glass.
Very good condition with no obvious chips, nibbles, cracks, or impact marks.
One scratch on one side. No water staining. Rim is about as clean as you get considering era.
It's slightly skew-whiff, as many of them are, though it's not that noticeable on display.
Molded, so shows signs of its formation on the sides - lines from time of manufacture.
Beautiful tactile object, very good condition.
Just over 13cm tall x 4.2cm wide.

It's petite at just shy of 6" and 3.5cm diameter. So big enough for a few stems.

Whitefriars ruby red glass bud vase, no 9571, 1960s. Vintage/retro oval tapering, 8" tall. Teardrop Geoffery Baxter, Mid Century cased glass
I believe this vintage Whitefriars vase was designed by Geoffery Baxter in 1961. British. It's in ruby red, quality thick glass in a tapering teardrop shape, slightly oval and flattened.
It's featured in the 1964 catalogue, so likely to be 1960s or early 1970s. Model no 9571.
The red appears to be sommerso - floating - cased in clear glass.
Flat polished base with an old sticker intact.
8" tall x 7.5cm wide x 4cm deep max.
Excellent condition.
No chips or nibbles, the smallest of small fleebites on the rim, pin-prick sized. A couple of other tiny body marks.
No signs of age on the base. There is also remnants or what I believe is the old model no. sticker (not legible).
Any marks only mentioned for accuracy, but really not noticeable - this example looks stunning.
Fab collectable condition, displays beautifully and a really nice quality example.

Whitefriars art glass vase in a tall bottle shape, #9730.
Designed by Geoffrey Baxter for the renowned British firm Whitefriars in the 1950s, but the Aubergine is a rarer colour way and dates from around 1972 to 1973. Mouth blown into a mould. The striking plum/purple colour is cased in clear glass, noticeable at the base.
Amazing condition with no chips, bites, fractures, repairs, etc.
Clean rounded rim, as manufactured.
No water staining. No signs of age on base.
Excellent displayable example, dare I say perfect!

2 Whitefriars Glacier sherry glasses M142, bark texture. Two 1970s retro/vintage clear/flint textured. Mid century drinks glass. 9.5cm, 80ml
A set of two Whitefriars full lead crystal distinctive textured sherry glasses, from the M142 Glacier range.
They're the smaller sherry glass size (apx 75-85ml), suitable for any short drinks such as sherry, port, small wine, gin, and other aperitifs.
Clear quality molded glass, textured with a bark like pattern on the outside.
Whitefriars ref no. M142, catalogued from the early 1970s to the early 1980s, so circa 1970s.
Designed by Geoffrey Baxter.
Both in excellent condition with no chips, sharp edges, cracks etc.
A manufacturing defect inside the stem of one.
Apx 9.5cm tall x 5cm wide. Matching pair.

Whitefriars art glass vase in a tall slim rectangular shape - an iconic 'nailhead'.
The vase was designed in the 1960's by Geoffrey Baxter, I believe. British.
It's a random indented pattern of dots, resembling round nail heads, on two sides, and smooth glass on the other two sides.
The randomness of the dots dates it to apx 1967-1973 as I believe the mould was changed to a more precise dot pattern in the mid 70's.
Ruby red - a really vivid distinctive Whitefriars colour. The colour is cased in clear/flint glass.
Fab condition with no chips, nibbles, fractures, repairs etc.
Flat clean chip free rim, sharp-ish inner edge from time of manufacture.
No water staining. No signs of age on the base.
Excellent displayable example, about as good as you can get - and so retro!
Between 6.5 and 7" tall - Measures 17cm in height, 4.5 x 4cm wide.
Very slightly tapers in towards top.

This golden amber vase is not cased in clear glass, it's all one solid colour.
It may be a later brighter new amber, I'm not sure exactly. The golden colour is rich, vivid, and caramel like.
A simple and stylish bulbous oval shape, not as wide as the Hambone vase.
Heavy thick quality glass, well made. Mouth blown/handmade.
Would hold a dozen short flower stems.

A rare 1974 lilac coloured Whitefriars flared chimney vase, model no 9819.
Rare as Lilac was only produced in 1974.
This design was made from 1974-1976 so this later flared design is also quite hard to come by.
Bark textured outer, as per the popular and collectable Whitefriars of the 60s/70s.
Most likely designed by Geoffrey Baxter. Made in England, molded glass.
This vase is catalogued as 7", but it is shy of that at 6 1/3".
If you see the last photo you can see it's clearly taller and wider than the popular and mass produced 'finger' or chimney vase 9729.

This design was made from 1974-1976 so this later flared design is also quite hard to come by.

I believe it was designed by Geoffrey Baxter in 1969, and forms part of a series with spots/swirls.
Was only made 1969 to 1971, so dates from then.
This example is tangerine (orange) and pewter (grey), cased in clear glass.
Rounded edges, flat rim, heavy thick glass.

Whitefriars art glass vase in a tall slim rectangular shape - an iconic 'nailhead'.
The vase was designed in the 1960's by Geoffrey Baxter, I believe.
It's a random indented pattern of dots, resembling round nail heads, on two sides, and smooth glass on the other two sides.
The randomness of the dots dates it to apx 1967-1973 as I believe the mold was changed to a more exact dot in the mid 70's.
Bright tangerine orange - a really vivid distinctive colour. The colour is cased in clear glass.
Fab condition with no chips, nibbles, fractures, etc. Clean, slightly rounded rim.
No water staining. Only a few tiny marks on the base from age, as you'd expect.
One internal bubble.
Excellent displayable example, about as good as you can get - and so retro!
Measures 17cm in height, 4.5 x 4.2cm wide.

This Whitefriars' elephant foot vase was designed by Geoffrey Baxter (I believe) in the 50s or so.
Probably dates from the 1960s, vintage.
The silver grey colouring is Pewter. Quite a dark Pewter.
Cased glass - clear outer. Five feet/lobes at base, vase can hold a few stems.
Rim is perfect, see photos.

Whitefriars 1974 P2 faceted glass paperweight, tightly packed concentric milliefiori canes, P2
A stunning and small and highly detailed and tightly packed milliefiori glass paperweight.
Made by Whitefriars in 1974 (British) - has their blue Monk logo and the date but too tiny to photograph (needs to be viewed upside down)!
Model shape is P2 - six flat circular faces/facets cut into a flat sphere (five sides, plus top).
Concentric circles of Milliefiori canes formed of tiny stars.
Pink outer circle, then white, dark blue, white, green, white and blue star middle.
Colour comes across as predominantly pink and white.
As good as you get condition with no noticable flaws!
Less than 6cm wide x 4.5cm tall.
Small - pen shown for scale only so you can appreciate the detail/size.
